چکیده

1. Preliminaries In general, for languages which allow a flexible order of major constituents, the grammatical variations of simple sentences are truth-conditionally equivalent regardless of the constituent sequences and of the intonational patterns. In Spanish, for instance, the six logically possible variations of sentences containing three constituents, namely, subject, verb, and object are felicitous in the context of a broad question such as Qué pasó? ‘What happened?’. Nonetheless, each variation may differ in the pragmatic information it conveys. A canonical order gives general information of the event and the participants as in sentence (1b).

A Case of Prosody-induced Word Order Variation without Narrow Focus*

1. Introduction This paper analyses a number of word order alternations observed in relative clauses in Spanish and concludes that they are the result of intonational considerations. However, it is shown that the relevant intonational factors are not the same as those related to focalization (which is well-known to induce word order alternations in Spanish), but rather they relate to the relati...

The use of phrase-level prosodic information in lexical segmentation: evidence from word-spotting experiments in Korean.

This study investigated the role of phrase-level prosodic boundary information in word segmentation in Korean with two word-spotting experiments. In experiment 1, it was found that intonational cues alone helped listeners with lexical segmentation. Listeners paid more attention to local intonational cues (...H#L...) across the prosodic boundary than the intonational information within a prosodi...

On Focus, Prosody, and Word Order in Argentinean Spanish: a Minimalist Ot Account

During the last decade, several proposals have been made for modeling focus-induced word order variation in Spanish, both in derivational and in optimality-theoretical frameworks. Furthermore, empirical studies have been carried out in order to capture the prosodic correlates of focus marking, most of them couched in the Autosegmental-Metrical (AM) model of intonational phonology. Interestingly...

Intonational correlates of Subject and Object realisation in Mawng (Australian)

A range of intonational devices can be used in the grammar of information and corrective focus marking in languages with relatively free word order. In this paper we explore whether nouns in the Australian Indigenous language Mawng are realised differently depending on syntactic function and focus. Results show that the pitch level associated with Subjects is higher in conditions of corrective ...

Acquiring Phrasing and Intonation in French as Second Language: the Case of Yes-No Questions Produced by Mexican Spanish Learners

In this paper, we propose a study of the final contours and the prosodic structure observed in yes-no questions in French as an L2. Our study consists in a cross-comparison of utterances recorded in French and Spanish in various settings, and produced by 15 Mexican Spanish learners of French (L2), 10 French speakers and 10 Mexican speakers. In the learner s’ productions, the intonational struct...
